5 out of 5 stars Very Good Pet Feeder   December 20, 2008
I bought my first Ergo Auto Pet Feeder in 2006 and just purchased a second one to feed our new kitten. I am very satisfied with the product. The digital timer on the feeder is easy to set up and is very flexible. You configure the timer to dispense food in any amount (based on time) as opposed to other feeders that dispense in 1/4 cup increments. For smaller animals such as cats, the 1/4 cup increments are large servings if you want multiple feedings per day.

It's kind of annoying to read the reviews that refer to over-eating problems related to this feeder. Yes, your cat could be getting food in between feedings by pawing at the opening to the dispenser but that just means that less food is dispensed at the time of the next feeding. Over a 24 hour period, the same amount of food gets dispensed. Besides, with the revamped auger cover design on the newer feeders, it makes it harder to use the "magic paw" to get a snack.

Tip: you can purchase a refurbished pet feeder directly from the Ergo website at a significant discount.

It's super easy to program as long as you pay attention to what you are doing. If you don't pay attention and follow the instructions, you will run the motor continuously and burn it out, as other reviewers have done. I read the reviews about it being difficult to use, but it's not. You just need to take the time to set it up properly. I've had to put some time into the food amount dispensed because the size of the kibble has changed. I also haven't had a problem with my cat trying to reach into the spout for more food as others have had with their cats. I do have three complaints though; (1) the timer face is somewhat hard to read if you're not at eye-level; (2) you can only dispense by time amounts and have to measure the amount of food coming out, even though this is probably the best way since different sizes of food will dispense at different speeds; and (3) the pieces are stuck together fairly tightly, but I guess that's to ensure food freshness. I highly recommend this feeder if you're willing to put in a small amount of work for the set up. But for me, it has more than paid for itself with the extra sleep time we all get now because we're not being woken up in the middle of the night by a hungry cat.

Well, we all loved the feeder. We have an overweight cat and thought that this would be a great way to control the amount that she ate. We fed just the fat cat with the feeder - and fed the other cat on top of the bookshelf. Everything was fine, until the fat cat lost enough weight so that she could jump up on top of the bookshelf and eat her brother's food, so that was no longer an option.

Then we started feeding both of them with the feeder. The older cat was used to self-feeding whenever he wanted, so this was a difficulty time for him. During the adaption period, he made every attempt to get into the feeder through the dispensing cover and, in fact, managed to tear it totally off f the container. This gave complete access to the dispensing auger to the younger (overweight) cat, whose smaller paws could now reach in and get food whenever she wanted. She then managed to loosen the auger so that when the timer went off nothing happened. *SIGH* So it's off to try another brand.

So, we did like it. Until the cats dismantled it. We got another brand, that doesn't have a spout, but the little one still sticks her paw up the chute to get food out whenever she wants, so it needs some modifications, too, looks like.

Recently bought this to replace a "Pet Bistro" feeder which was useless. This one is a little better, but difficult to figure out the right portion amount when feeding my cat. They have since taken care of the problem of the cat's ability to get into the chute to obtain more food. But the timer, programming is tricky. Got this for when we travel and it should be ok.

We have a cat who was gaining weight quickly when we got her, so we got this feeder for weight control. If you have cats who wake you up in the morning to discuss their immediate need for food, it has the added advantage of becoming the object of her meowing and nagging when she's hungry -- instead of walking on our faces at 5 a.m. on a Saturday morning, she goes into the other room and lodges her feline complaints with the feeder instead of with us.

It's also great when we go on vacation, though we still have someone come over once a day to make sure it's working and the cat is OK overall.

I would almost give this product 5 stars just for giving us our morning sleep back, except that, as many others have said, Smart Kitty figured out after about a year (slower than other cats on the uptake, I guess!) how to insert her paw into the spout at just the right angle to get kibbles out. (I have the old model that doesn't have the tube-like spout.)

I rigged up this whole duct tape and cardboard barrier to keep her out of the spout, but that only lasted a few months before she figured out how to get past it.

My question to others who have this feeder: Theoretically, could she paw out 5 cups worth of kibbles if she's persistent enough? Or is there a limited amount of food stuck in the auger and that's all she can get out? I've noticed that when she's especially vigorous with her pawing, it takes a few extra seconds for food to start dispensing the next time the timer goes off, which makes me wonder if by pawing between meals, she's still getting the same total amount. Please respond using the Comments button if you have any insights on this.

Overall, though, I'd still recommend this product because of how much easier it makes your life!

Oh, and I forgot to say, the first feeder I ordered, I made a mistake and set it to go off from 2:00 p.m. to 2:01 a.m. (instead of p.m.) -- when I came home from work, it was making a horrible buzzing noise because it had dispensed kibbles until the bowl filled up and the motor jammed. (A very stuffed and happy cat was sitting next to the feeder, having just won the feline version of the lottery.) I couldn't get the thing to work again after that because the motor was burned out. So I called ErgoSystems and was very up front about the fact that it was my own stupid fault, but they replaced the whole thing for free. I thought that was above-and-beyond excellent service!
