If all houses had the same width entryways, everyone could use the same child safety gate and never give it a second thought. The reality, of course, is that, like babies, every house and every doorway is different. But baby still wants to explore, and some areas of the house are just not an option. The Evenflo Soft and Wide Gate is an excellent choice for light traffic areas with wide entries. Expanding from 38 inches to 60 inches, this nylon mesh gate feels soft but provides solid protection. The pressure-mounted rubber bumpers adjust individually, so it's possible to, say, have the lower tension bars attached to trim while the upper part is mounted to the wall. Many older houses have uneven settlement, creating varying doorway widths--not a problem for this gate. With a few twists of the rail, the gate can be custom-fit to any opening.  My son broke his arm falling over this gate December 24, 2008

It's ironic that my son would break his arm over something I bought to help protect him. He was 2 years old. I wanted a gate that was wide, could expand to a wider width on top than on bottom to accommodate the baseboards. I didn't want anything with footholds that he could use for climbing. This gate fit the bill nicely.
What happened? My son tried to climb the gate anyway. He was able to get his leg over the top bar and when he did, the material on the top bar slid over and around the bar. He couldn't grip the bar and slid right over the top, breaking his arm. Try gripping a metal bar with a loose padded nylon sleeve and you will see how difficult it is to grip the bar. Is this just a freak accident? Probably, but I can't see myself giving 5 stars for a safety product that my child defeated.

Very happy with the purchase of this gate. Looks great, matches any decor. Sturdy mesh. Just a bit more difficult to take down and put up than other gates. I am very pleased with the gate overall.

I recently purchased this gate, and wish I had known about it before I spent nearly $200.00 on another gate and extensions to fit a doorway of 53" that broke already! This gate is easy to assemble, VERY sturdy, and easy to move. I even traveled with this gate! The chocolate and cream color are attractive, and so is the price! If i would have found this gate earlier, i would have bought 3 or 4 of them. The only issue i can see for others would be that you must step over the gate while it is up, unless you want to take it down and put it back up again. I'm 5'3" and have absolutely no problem stepping over it. However, my husband and I are both athletic and agile. Still, the gate is only about 27" tall. If that is a problem for you, it is still a perfect gate for even a low traffic area, and great to take to grandma's or a friend's house! I highly reccomend this gate!
