Amazon.com Product Reviews

With so many other hassles to worry about, a gate should be worry-free and easy. Using the simplicity-by-design approach, the Evenflo SimpleStep pressure gate makes cordoning off stairways and rooms easy as cake. The pressure-mounted gate takes 20 minutes to install with no tools needed and is much easier than its wall-anchored counterparts. Once you install the gate, the most difficult part is over. The walk through door employs a squeeze, slide, and swing action that can be done with one hand. The red/green gate indicator tells you when the gate is properly locked. Be sure to measure your doorways before purchasing--the Evenflo gate is made for either 29-inch or 39.5-inch (with the included extension panel) openings, and the pressure mounts give you a tiny bit of slack. The Evenflo SimpleStep pressure gate is 30.5 inches in height, and the manufacturer recommended age use for children is six months to two years. --Scott Teal

Amazon.com Product Description
Before you know it, your sweetly immobile infant will be a non-stop exploring machine. Take steps now to make your home safer for your little adventurer. The Evenflo SimpleStep Pressure Gate will make doorways and stairs inaccessible to your child while providing a convenient design that makes life easier for parents. This gate is ideal for children ages 6 to 24 months and is recommended for use in doorways or at the bottom of stairways.

The Evenflo SimpleStep Pressure Gate offers:
  • Sturdy, lightweight gate helps keep babies and toddlers safe
  • Pressure-mounting system makes installation easy
  • One-handed "Slide-Loc" makes for convenient use

With the one-hand Slide-Loc mechanism, you simply squeeze the handle and slide back to open.
Easy to Use and Install
The Evenflo SimpleStep Pressure Gate is a sturdy, lightweight metal gate in a neutral color that blends in with any decor. It is 30 inches tall and expands from 29 inches to 39-1/2 inches with the included extension panel. Featuring a a pressure-mounting system, the gate is designed for quick and easy installation: no tools, no permanent hardware to damage your walls. The pressure-mounting system also allows for more versatile installation at stairway banisters or other unusual openings.

The gate is just as easy to use as it is to install. It easily opens with a special one-handed "Slide-Loc" mechanism: simply squeeze and slide the handle to open the gate. The gate also swings open, making it much easier for baby-toting parents to use. It then latches shut with a simple push.

Super Safety Features
The Evenflo SimpleStep Pressure Gate's red/green indicator shows whether the gate is properly locked, to give you additional peace of mind. Its slats are less than three inches apart, which is the recommended spacing for safety. To maximize the gate's safety features, make sure it is installed less than three inches from the floor. It is also recommended for use at the bottom of stairways only; the top of the stairway should be cordoned with a hardware-mounted gate.

4 out of 5 stars good gate for the price   January 6, 2009
The gate is easy to install but the handle does stick a little and the gate still moves when you open/ close it. Not terrific one-handed but does the job I need it to; blocking the bottom of stairs safely from my 2 kids.

1 out of 5 stars Horrible unsteady gate!   January 6, 2009
This gate is horrible. I cannot find a way of making it tight because it requires that you loosen the pressure mounts so the door has 1/8th of an inch room so you can slide the handle to unlock it. In order for our gate to reach the 1/8th of an inch we had to loosen the pressure mounts so much that there is no way it would stay in place with my 12m old pulling on it!!
Not only did we have issues with that but it is REALLY difficult to open! There is no way my 8yo can unlock the gate and even I'm having a lot of trouble.
Save your money and purchase something different. We'll be returning this gate.

3 out of 5 stars Difficult to open and close   December 31, 2008
We are using this gate more as a pet barrier than child gate. As a mother of 3 boys, I've installed lots of gates. This one does install very quickly. But I keep wondering if I've done something wrong... if I tighten the upper adjusters as tight as possible, it becomes much more difficult to open and close the gate.

As other reviewers have noted, it is not simple to open. You need to squeeze small buttons on opposite sides of the latch, then pull the handle back. I'm an average size woman, and I need two hands to do it. If I loosen the upper adjusters as the instructions indicate, so there is a 1/8" gap between the two sides of the latch, the gate is not as securely mounted. Ours is in a wood-framed doorway so good pressure is possible if it didn't make the latch so difficult to operate. Not sure if I'll be keeping it.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent product!   December 31, 2008

We have this gate between our kitchen and living room and we LOVE it! We have used it for about 9 months so far (from the time my child could crawl through 15 months).
It opens in either direction and it will stay all the way open when you want it to, which is really nice for when your child is in bed and you don't need to gate closed. You push it shut behind you and it easily shuts on its own. It is extremely sturdy and durable. It never once came down and my son hangs from it like a monkey. The surface is easy to clean and it does not scratch or get marked up. There is no where for any fingers to get pinched, which was very important to me. There is nothing to step on for a kid to use to climb over. It is not hard to take down if you need to - or to put back up. You only need one hand to open it. Most adults coming to our house had to be shown how to open it once, but then they got it. It would be very hard for a toddler to figure out how to open it because there is a little button on each side of the latch that you squeeze with your thumb and fore finger while sliding the latch back. It would be very hard for a toddler to get their hand up and around the latch and squeeze with enough force, while sliding it back to get it open.

5 out of 5 stars Simple Step Pressure Gate   December 24, 2008
Great product. It's really nice to have to gate to open rather than taking the whole contraption down, as with other gates. This has helped a lot in corralling the five dogs and two cats in my house! Will definitely buy another one if I ever need to. :]
