As a CKC registered Bernese Mountain Dog breeder in Nova Scotia, my priority is improving the health, movement, structure, longevity and superior temperament of this breed. Located on the South Shore of Nova Scotia, 90 minutes from Halifax, Riverstead Bernese Mountain Dogs and puppies have larger than life personalities. Confident, charming and comic, they love their people and just want to be good Berners. With the increased interest in Bernese Mountain Dogs, there are more puppy mills and backyard breeders. Besides being a breeder and owner of Bernese since 1986, I also open my doors as a "not for profit", Private Bernese Mountain Dog Rescue Home. I have an increasing number of people contacting me in need of assistance concerning dogs and puppies. Many of these dogs brought before me by their owners are of poor health, structure and most disturbing to me, temperament. What is also disturbing is that a number of these dogs are coming from registered kennels. A dog's temperament is not only predetermined by genetics, but also by the environment they are raised in; especially during the first sixteen weeks of life. So please, do your homework.
Bernese Mountain Dogs are a gentle, sensitive breed. If a Bernese Mountain Dog puppy starts out in a kennel with an unhappy, dejected, sad mother, or in a Pet Shop living in a glass box, often they can be shy, nervous and reserved. These are not quality traits. A shy puppy can become a fearful adolescent, which in turn becomes an aggressive, fear-biting adult. Riverstead breeding dogs are of superior Canadian, American and Swiss Champion bloodlines. I am active in conformation showing, draft and obedience work. My dogs are all family members and reside in my home. There are no kennel dogs at Riverstead Bernese Mountain Dogs and Rescue Home. It should be noted that I have one litter at a time. The puppies are home raised in a loving, involved environment and are well-socialized.
All puppies are $1,500.00; (minus deposit), registered in your name at nine weeks on a NON-BREEDING contract and guaranteed for two years against hereditary disorders. Your Riverstead Bernese Mountain Dog puppy comes with six weeks medical insurance (free to you), a thirty pound bag of quality food, implanted micro-chip, rear dew claws removed and vaccinated. I do not ask for a deposit to be put on my waiting list, but I do ask for a deposit of $300.00 when the pups are three weeks old. At that time I encourage families to come and play with the puppies as much as possible. The interaction is very important and beneficial to the puppies. It also helps me to determine which puppy will go to which home. I do not approve a family until we have met at my home. At Riverstead Bernese Mountain Dogs and Rescue Home we strive for great puppies, for great people. Many of my Riverstead dog owners would be happy to converse with you on my behalf. I am committed to them and to my dogs. At riversteadbernesemountaindogs@yahoogroups.com my "puppy peeps" share stories and ask questions. I host an annual Berner Bash for Riverstead Bernese Mountain Dogs, their families and friends.

Riverstead Bernese Mountain Dogs are from champion bloodlines as well as being champions themselves. As a CKC registered breeder, my breeding dogs are true to type and temperament. The bloodlines I use in my breeding program are carefully researched. This research allows me to improve and build on Riverstead pedigrees. All appropriate health certifications on the parents are available for your viewing when you visit Riverstead. My adult dogs are exercised daily in my vast woodland property. They are my constant companions, which is all a Berner really wants. Riverstead Bernese Mountain Dog Puppies are sold on a non-breeding contract which includes a twenty-four month guarantee against hereditary disorders. They receive all appropriate health checks, vaccines and treatment for common parasites. Dogs and Puppies are fed high quality kibble, fresh raw vegetables, fruit and meats. Of course this is accompanied with hugs, kisses and lots of interaction.
Puppies play outside daily with the other adult dogs as soon as the weather and their age allows. The Bernese Mountain Dog requires considerable attention, companionship and interaction. If they are not socialized early in life by the age of sixteen weeks, they can become reserved and "standoffish" toward strangers. Confidence and ego are traits that are built upon by the owner. Riverstead Bernese Mountain Dog puppies deserve the best and the best is what they get. Please be sure you are committed to this.

As a breeder of Bernese Mountain Dogs, the puppies and their placement is a commitment I take very seriously. I have been involved in rescue for many years and I have seen too many animals turned away, mistreated, lonely and sad. I prefer homes with someone present the majority of the time. I personally don't feel that lying on a floor staring at a door knob all day to be a healthy way to live. However, if there is already a dog in the home for companionship, or a plan is in place to have the puppy in care, then we can discuss this further. I require fenced yards in urban and city neighborhoods. Potential owners must visit here before being approved. If this is not possible due to distance or weather, I may accept doing a phone interview. A deposit of $300.00 is required when puppies are three weeks old and able to receive visitors. I do not sell CKC registered breeding rights on puppies. My belief is that this is an unethical practice and no reputable breeder would release a dog for breeding as a puppy. A true lover of a breed wants to maintain and improve upon breed type, temperament, structure, movement, health and longevity. Please note that I do not ship puppies.
Bernese Mountain Dogs and Puppies love the outdoors, especially in the cooler months, but should not be left outside alone for long periods of time. Their desire to be with their people and their calm temperament makes them a great house dog. The MIRA foundation, trainers of assistance dogs, conducted a ten year study from 1989-1999 to determine the most humanly compatible working breed and they concluded that the the Bernese Mountain Dog matched this criteria. A true farm dog, they are kind, caring, gentle and most importantly, respectful towards all other creatures. Berners have a great capacity to love. A good watch dog, but never a guard dog, they let you know when visitors have arrived. Berners remember friends they have met before and are exuberant in welcoming them back. The Berner requires a weekly brushing and moderate exercise, but should not be used as a long distance jogger’s companion. Being a large-boned breed, hiking in the woods is more their style. Bernese Mountain Dogs were used for draft work in their native Switzerland, hauling milk to the dairy. This required steady movement, strength and a stable, calm, stoic temperament. It should be mentioned that Berners should not be put in harness before the age of two. They are slow to develop, taking up to 3 years to mature physically, mentally and emotionally. They are not inclined to wander once matured and generally stay close to their people from day one. During training, they may seem to be slow to learn, but once they understand what is expected, they will always try their best. Bernese Mountain Dogs do not respond to harsh training or a heavy hand. Generally, they are a happy breed and like happy people. Owners need to be kind, patient and consistent in training as Bernese need time to think things through. Many owners will describe them as being stubborn. On the contrary, I see them as contemplative and thoughtful. If you raise your voice at a Bernese to "hurry in out of the rain", often they simply sit down in the mud and wait for you to come out and ask nicely. Bernese are very willing and eager to please, they just want to be your BFF. Bernese will jump through hoops for a kind word and a belly rub. The breed is excellent with children, but since they use their paws a lot, they can unintentionally hurt a small child. Behavior like sitting on your feet, leaning, head butting, and paw raking your legs to say hello make this a breed for a true dog lover. They are not a breed that will be happy being banished to lay on their bed, when there is space under your chair, or a lap waiting for a head. Bernese Mountain Dogs are born comics and once they know what makes you laugh, they will relish in repeating the same joke. Bernese tend not have a huge ego when young; therefore, they must have their confidence built by you. Experiencing the big outside world at a young age is necessary. This does not mean just puppy parks. Take them to the bank, post office, hardware store, anywhere dogs are welcome. The more they experience, the more confident they will be. Waiting to take your Bernese out and about can result in a shy and nervous dog. As the pack leader, it is your responsibility to exhibit a confident and an assured presence. This will tell your Bernese puppy that all is well and help them to be confident themselves. Socialize... socialize!
